OCLANSORB PLUS
BIOLOGICAL OIL SPILL TREATMENT
FOR THE TREATMENT OF OIL SPILLS
in Marshes, Mangroves, Wetlands, and Shorelines
INTENDED USES Oil
spills cause significant and lasting damage to rivers, lakes, marine estuaries, mangroves, wetlands,
and shore lines. While manual cleanup methods can be used in some cases to
reduce the damage, some spills cannot be manually cleaned without destroying the
ecosystem (i.e. - mangrove marshes, wetlands, tidal pools). Fortunately,
nature has the ability to cleanse itself of oil and other hydrocarbons through evaporation,
oxidation, and natural biodegradation of petroleum hydrocarbon. These
methods are in fact, relied upon by cleanup contractors to remove residual
oil. To be effective, however, natural biodegradation requires a vital set
of growth conditions, for bacteria which include adequate moisture, nutrients,
oxygen, reasonable temperatures, pH, etc. In many cases, one or more of
these conditions is missing, causing biodegradation rates to be poor. As a
result, some ecosystems can take decades to naturally recover from a spill. Fortunately,
many oil spill sites can be treated to optimize the conditions favorable
to natural biodegradation. Spills into mangrove or wetland marshes and
spills impacting rocky or sandy shorelines in particular are good candidates for
engineered biotreatment. Oclansorb
Plus Biological Oil Absorbent is an exciting new patent-pending
material . Oclansor Plus is designed to:
-
(1)
immediately absorb and oil or fuel spill on surface water, marshes, mangrove,
beach or shoreline and
-
(2) to be left in place in
the spill site to accelerate the environmentally safe biodegradation of that
hydrocarbon through the use of controlled bioaugmentation.
Oclansorb
Plus is recommended for situations in which an oil absorbent can be
physically applied to a spill (i.e. from the air or boat) but cannot be
logistically or practically be picked up again and removed from the site. It
is designed to be left in place ( in situ). When
broadcast over a crude oil or fuel spill in marshes, wetlands, mangroves or
along shorelines, the specially processed peat moss absorbent in Oclansorb
Plus immediately begins to soak up the spill and to encapsulate it with high efficiency.
Within 30 minutes, a food grade gelling agent blended in to Oclansorb Plus
then activates in the water, providing some tackiness to Oclansorb Plus
to increase its ability to cleanse oil from the blades of wetland grasses
and the roots of mangroves. Within hours, the third component of Oclansorb
Plus, consisting of large numbers of high performance, oil degrading
microbes and timed release microbial nutrients begin to diffuse from Oclansorb
Plus into the oil layer to quickly begin accelerating the natural
biodegradation of the contaminant. A
TRULY INNOVATIVE DESIGN IN ECOLOGICAL PROTECTION:
The Patent-Pending Oclansorb Plus formula is a combination
of the following non-toxic materials:

What Can Be Expected From Oclansorb Plus
Oil spills slowly disappear from the environment
primarily through natural biodegradation, evaporation and oxidation. Left
unassisted, the process can take 5 to 20 years. In marshes and mangroves,
oil spills cannot be effectively cleaned by manual methods and are, therefore,
an ecological disaster to marine marsh ecosystems.
The use of Oclansorb Plus as part
of an active biotreatment program will significantly accelerate natural recovery
from a spill by trapping the spill with a top quality absorbent and
accelerating its natural biodegradation. Typically, a 5 to 10 fold
increase in biological oil removal rates can be achieved under well managed
conditions. If limited sections of shoreline, mangrove, wetland, marsh
and/or floating slick are treated intensively with Oclansorb Plus,
a reduction in residual oil mass of over 80% is feasible within 6 months,
with a portion of the spill evaporating and a portion biodegrading.
Please note that the complete removal of
oil from some environments may not be possible within the first year. For
example, thick crude oils spilled in cold, Arctic conditions will evaporate and
biodegrade much more slowly than warmer climates. Likewise, all active,
natural biodegradation requires the presence of moisture. On hot,
dry sites, (e.g. the Persian Gulf spill), microbial action will slow down until
the next rain, tidal flush or until water is re-introduced. Conversely,
storms or strong wave action can quickly erode Oclansorb Plus from
the site. However, even in those circumstances, initial treatment of the
site with Oclansorb Plus will seed the site with beneficial
bacteria and nutrients and help to optimize the conditions required for accelerated
natural biodegradation of the spill.
Key Solutions cannot make the final judgment of how
valuable such an increase in oil pollutant removal from the impacted
ecosystem would be to a given client. However, Oclansorb
Plus is an inexpensive remediation strategy that is capable of
accelerating the destruction of residual oil in a spill site and is, therefore,
a very attractive strategy for minimizing environmental damage.
Application Rates
Oclansorb Plus weighs 1 kg(2.2 lbs)
per 5 liters of volume when packed. One full bag holds 44 liters and
weighs about 9 kg (20 lbs).
Oclansorb Plus - For Marsh, Mangrove,
Wetland and Water Spills:
If the spill is reasonably fresh and has spread
out into a thin layer (>0.5mm) over the water surface, apply Oclansorb
Plus at the rate of:
Thus, one 44 liter bag of Oclansorb Plus
will treat about 1,900 ft2 or 180 mt2 of oiled water. For weathered or
heavily oiled surfaces, up to double that dose is suggested.
For even coverage and best results, we recommend
application from helicopter, airdrop or shallow boat with powered air blowers to
disperse the Oclansorb Plus. Ground spotters should be
deployed to report on uniformity of coverage. Apply Oclansorb Plus
until "wet" with oil but not saturated. I free oil is still
present, apply additional Oclansorb Plus until the spill is
absorbed.
As Oclansorb Plus contacts
the water/oil interface, it will begin to soak up the spill. If oil has
coated mangrove roots or wetland grasses, tidal action or wave action will
slowly assist Oclansorb Plus in cleansing root and grass surfaces.
Oclansorb Plus
- For Intertidal Zone, Shoreline, Beach and Riverbank
If the spill is reasonably fresh and has oiled
the shoreline, rocks, sand or gravel in a thin layer (>1 mm), apply Oclansorb
Plus at the rate of :
-
1 kg (5Lt) per 10 mt2 (110 ft2) of the
shore line, or
-
1 lb per 50 ft2 (47 mt2)
-
Thus, one 44 liter bag of Oclansorb Plus
will treat about 950 ft2 or 90 mt2. of oiled shoreline.
-
For heavily
oiled surfaces or wave tossed shorelines, double that
dose. Apply Oclansorb Plus at low tide to the wet, exposed
beach sand, gravel or rock.
-
NOTE: The food grade gelling agent in Oclansorb
Plus will require 1 - 2 hours to become sufficiently tacky to stick to
the rocks, sand and gravel. Apply until "wet" with oil but not
saturated. If free oil is still present, apply additional Oclansorb
Plus until the spill is absorbed.
NOTES:
-
If using on a shoreline, beach or land spill,
water must be added periodically to keep the Oclansorb/oil matrix
wet. Rainfall, tidal flushing or manual sprinkling with fresh or salt
water are acceptable. If a water spray is used, direct the water into
the air so that it falls in an arc on to the Oclansorb Plus
like raindrops or mist.
-
Periodically measure the presence of
Ammonia-N, Nitrate-N and Phosphate in the water column or from the shoreline
runoff. If the concentration of the N or P falls below 2mg/L or 0.5
mg/L respectively, additional N:P time release fertilizer should be
applied. Contact Key Solutions for guidance.
-
Measure decreases in petroleum hydrocarbons
over time. When concentration drops to a satisfactory level, discontinue
fertilizer and water application.
-
If tidal flushing or water flow causes the
treatment site to become re-oiled or the Oclansorb Plus layer
is flushed out, re-apply new Oclansorb Plus per the above
application rates.
Oclansorb Plus is available in 44
liter, 9 kg bags. Shelf Life is a minimum of 2 years if stored in a dry
place. Product can be safely stored in temperature ranges of 0 degree to
